Once Upon A Cold Winter Night « Thread Started on Apr 17, 2009, 4:26pm »
The air was cold this winter night. The bright snow on the ground seemed to glow in the moonlight overhead and chilled Vyper’s paws. But there was an odd, worm breeze that rustled his grey fur. He couldn’t figure out why there would be any type of warmth on a chilly night like this. Then again, it didn’t exactly matter, did it? Nope. He needed to keep his thoughts strait, and to focus on the mission he had at hand. But what was that mission? He was a lone wolf, with only a select few acquaintances, and even fewer friends. But he was very happy that way. So what could a wolf like him possibly be searching for? That’s what he was wondering. He was a wolf on a mission to find why he was on a mission, if that made any sense at all. It sure confused him if he thought about it to much.
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. He began walking atop the snow, his paws only lightly sinking in. Luckily it wasn’t that deep tonight. The last snow storm had been days ago and the sunlight during the day had melted much of it away. That was a good thing, too. It made his journey easier. And what was also good, was that it was completely silent, besides his pawsteps. That is exactly what Vyper liked about winter, though. There were no birds singing, no crickets chirping. No nothing except him and the vast, seemingly empty wilderness of trees.

Wisps of hot air billowed in front of her muzzle as she ran, it came out in silent gasps. Everything passed by her as a white blur. The newly fallen snow was both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it would hide her scent from those that may still be following her and a curse because it left her paw prints in the snow, easily traceable. Though, with her small stature and a long bushy tail she was able to swipe away most of her paw prints as she ran, or at elast obscure them. The problem with this was she concentrated to much of covering her trail as she tried to run as fast as she could and not enoguh on her surroundings; not to mention the energy she was burning up.
She could not remeber how much time had passed, to her time ceased to exist. It did not matter, just as the land her paws quickly ate up did not matter. She could not waste energy in skirting around territories so she went through them and hoped she did not get caught. By the time someone would stumble upon her scent she would be long gone.
Yet, as fast as the sun had risen, it had also quickly vanished beyond the trees making way for a night brightened by the snow around her. Despite the chill, her tongue lolled out the side of her mouth in a desperate battle to push air into her lungs and keep her burning legs moving blindly forward. At the moment her body temp was too high, yet once she stopped it would drop quickly and dangerously.
The dull ache on her right hind leg was ignored and mixed in with the new aches her body presented her. And despite her caution in leaving no trail she could do nothing about the drips of blood that followed in her wake. Two puncture wounds marked her right hind. When one of the wolves had lunged she had turned quickly enough to escape a grab upon her spine, but not quickly enough to escape unmarked.
The corners of her muzzle, twisted upward for a moment as she remebered hearing the sickening crunch of a broken jaw as her back legs shot out and caught one wolf attempting to close in. It was enough of a distraction to escape... Until the chase began of course. That was when she climbed the trees. She shook her head as her eyelids began to droop. Pupils widening, almost blocking out her stormy gray iris' yet not enough to hide the crazed look within.
The running, exertion, exhaustion, and pain from all of her limbs almost knocking what little control she has left out from under her. A darkening in the snow ahead of her barely registers in her mind. Instinct pulls at her and she pushes on her back legs in an attempt to jump over the figure she has yet to truly register within her mind. She cannot get the push she needs, as her back legs almost give way beneath her before she launches herself.
Falling short, her front paws do not lift high enough and catch on the stranger's back senging her flying head over paws. Landings in a heap, a low whimper escapes before it is cut off once again by pure instinct. Stormy gray orbs open, remarkably clear as she is now no longer in motion and the pain makes itself heard. Disoriented and unable to remember what exactly happened, she attempts to pull her legs under her and rise only to sink back to the cold ground.
Dark gray ears flip backwards against her skull, still heavily panting she licks at the snow in front of her before taking a bite out of the snow in an attempt to rehydrate her exhausted body. She is once more laying on her side though she is holding her head up. She can feel the ebb of blood slow as it clots in the cold. One less thing to worry about for the moment. She silently thoght. Though she knew she was in trouble as she could feel the tiredness come on.
She shakes her head in disbelief, a humorless chuckle escapes as she realizes the predicament she is in. The irony of it all. The typical death. Drive oneself to exhaustion and fall asleep only to have your life claimed by the cold hands of Winter. It was at this point her mind sluggishly remembered she tried to jump over something and clearly did not make it. Her panting stopped, pink tongue slipping back in her muzzle. She had been facing away from the wolf, as that was how she had landed. Ears listening intently, she attempted to stand once more. Adrenaline coursing through her veins, she stood slowly, shakily, and kept most of her weight off of her right hind.
Turning to face the strange wolf, stormy gray orbs clear despite her mind being half dazed. Her head raised slightly, and despite her dark and light gray fur being plastered with snow it still seemed to raise somehow. She was small, lithe, yet muscle born and despite her non fighting condition she still managed to hold herself tall and waited. If it be death it did not matter, Tempest would not lie in the snow as if broken.

His pace was slow, his steps sure. There was no rush for him. He had no final destination, no dead set direction, nowhere to go but forward. His paws would carry him to wherever his fait wanted to take him. Whether it be to the deserts, to the mountains, to prey, or to another wolf he did not know. But that is exactly how Vyper preferred it. He wasn’t fond of planning things out and knowing exactly what was going to happen and when. No. He liked to take things as they came. That was the excitement of life for him.
So he carried on, slowly walking and letting the piercing silence fill his ears, and relax him. Despite winter’s hardships, it was his favorite time of the year because of this silence. This absence of life. Vyper didn’t hate others. Not at all. He just preferred to be alone and the emptiness around him right now was almost comforting.
Everything around him looked the same to Vyper. Tree here, tree there. Pile of snow here, pile of snow there. Wolf… wait wolf!? He heard it seconds before he had spotted it out of the corner of his right eye and turned his head to look. Before he could even blink it was trying to jump over him. And he had been expecting it to do just that and keep running. But instead something hit his back, and the other wolf tumbled and landed in a heap on his left side. Vyper’s eyes widened as he turned his hole body to look at it. What the heck had just happened? He noticed it was trying to get up, but it just sank right back to the ground. Wow. He had never seen another of his kind in such a sorry state in years! What was wrong with it? Vyper was actually getting a little worried. His ears perked forward and he tilted his head to the side, staring at the wolf as it appeared to be munching on some snow. Though he couldn’t exactly tell because it was facing away.
And as the other did some odd chuckle, he took a step back. This was one situation Vyper didn’t know how to react to. What the heck was he supposed to do right now? He didn’t like paying attention to anyone. But when a wolf jumps over him and stumbles, he cant help but be at least slightly interested. His ears went back slightly when the other staggered to its feet, making Vyper take another step back. It turned to face him and he finally managed to tell it was a female. Vyper gave her a weird look, his expression simply translating to ‘what in the world happened to you?’.

Stormy gray orbs slowly registered that she was standing before 'another' male, one taller and larger than her. Though, given her size despite her mane many were larger than her. At the look on the wolf's face, she relaxed slightly. It seemed she would not have to face death at the moment, at least not from this wolf. Her back legs began to tremble slightly, although it would be hard for the other wolf to notice. She sat abruptly as if she could not stand anymore and right after her front legs sunk forward so she was laying down.
Temepst heaved a sigh as she rested her head upon her front paws, her bushy tail curling about her to help keep her body temperature from dropping fast. She disliked the fact that she was now laying down and this wolf stood above her, even if he had taken a few steps back. It seemed... submissive. And Tempest was anything but submissive. Hence, her predicament now.
Her eyes closed a moment as she finally gained control of her breathing so it was steady and even. Stormy gray orbs opened once more to look upon the bewildered expression of the wolf before her. She knew she must look terrible, her fur being in disarray and her mane plastered against her body and around her ears. She lapped up some more snow to cool the burning in her throat from breathing so hard before.
Lifting her head slightly she said, "No worries wolf I am not crazy, just half dead." She looked around, yet only saw snow and trees. She was somewhere, but where that somewhere was she could not tell. Her eyes drooped slightly, she could feel the small tremers within her muscles. Temepst could not believe how much she had overdone it nor how she had gotten this far. She wondered slightly how much farther she would have gotten had she not fell over that wolf.
Realizing the silence that was growing and the awkwardness of it, she focused her gray orbs back on the wolf with an intensity that seemed out of place for a wolf in such poor shape. Hi, I am Tempest. She gave half a grin in an attempt to hide the pain and exhaustion she felt. It is not as bad as I must look. I had a run in with a few wolves in neutral territory, nothing to bad. A bite here, a few bruises there. I have been running since... Tempest paused as if trying to think when she had indeed escaped while downplaying it. About mid sun-up. Tempest frowned slightly thinking of what she must sound like... A coward... having run for the better part of the day. Look, I'm not a coward or anything... It's just three blood lust wolves against well just me... She trailed off as she realized how much she had been talking. It was not like her, nor did she explain herself to others. Laying her head upon her paws again, she watched the male wolf in front of her wondering what he would make of her.

Vyper watched with a slight frown as the other wolf sat, then slowly sank to the ground. She looked exhausted in his opinion. How long had she been running for? And why the heck had she tried jumping over him instead of running around, which would of lowered the risk of tripping and stumbling such as she had done. But it didn’t really matter now, did it? The female was already down, so there was no use for Vyper to wonder what she could of done differently. And it wasn’t any of his business anyways.
"No worries wolf I am not crazy, just half dead."
Well that much was obvious. Vyper sighed and averted his gaze to the ground between them, looking to be in deep thought before finally looking back at her, not looking pleased at all. It would be no surprise to him if the other wolf collapsed and died right there on the spot. She looked as if she may go any minute now.

Vyper stared at her like she really was crazy. Why had some wolves tried to attack her? Why had she run for so long? Surely she must of left them behind within the first half hour of her run. And why was she acting as if it were no big deal to have all this happen to her? He sighed and laid down as well, his golden eyes still on her. He didn’t want to seem threatening, so maybe being on the same level as her would help. “Well, sounds like you have found yourself in quite a situation” he said quietly. "I''m Vyper".

Tempest watched the emotions play across the male's face as she talked, and after she was done. After her first statement, he turned his gaze upon her and seemed to look at her seemingly unpleased. Why? She wondered silently. She realized than how gold his eyes were. Strange. To not have noticed before and to have noticed all of a sudden.
Darkness was pushing at the edges of her mind, her control and will making her tired. A sigh escaped between the lips of her muzzle making her wince, although she tried to hide it. After she had finished talking, he finally gave her that look that said, 'Are you crazy?' She almost grinned. Almost.
Her sides expanded and contracted almost with ease now. The rushing sound of blood in her ears almost faded, giving way to the quietness of the cold evening. It was peaceful and she could fully appreciate it especially given her situation. The roaring of the wind as she flew by, the pounding of her heart beating against the walls of her mind, the harsh laboring of her lungs as they overworked. All of it seemed to quiet down now that she was not moving. As she thought of all of this her eyelids drooped, almost fully closing. Sleep. It was all that claimed her mind in that moment, the darkness taking control.
Yet, at that moment, he spoke. The wolf before her acknowledged her situation and introduced himself. No matter how quiet his voice, it was this that pulled her from sleeping whether it be a sleep she would not wake up from she was unsure of. Her eyelids fully opened, startled at how easy sleep had almost claimed her.
Stormy gray orbs, clear once more, focused on Vyper. Replaying what he had said through her mind. She noticed he was now laying down. Not only had she almost fallen asleep while in the open during a cold winter night in such a condition, she had almost fallen asleep in front of a stranger wolf. And she was missing details, noticing them afterwards. What was the point of escaping if she were to die not even a day later? She questioned herself silently. Yet, she knew the answer. Tempest would not be beaten to death if she could help it. If she died now it would be a peaceful death. At that thought, the urge or rather the want to live fed her will until there was a little more brightness behind her eyes.
Her thoughts centered once more on the wolf before her. How easily distracted she had become. She lifted her head slightly with a tilt and an expression of one trying to figure something out. This wolf, Vyper, sensed her unease at him being above her level and laid down to ease that fear. Once again she had wanted to ask why? Her muzzle did not move.
Gray orbs lightened, the corners of her muzzle lifted just a fraction. A pleasure to meet you Vyper, sorry to have met this way. A thoguht flashed across her mind, gray orbs looked at the ground her expression a mixture of emotions she tried to control. Look, I know I sorta crashed into you. I have taken quite a bit of your time already. I'd understand if you left... She would have said more yet she couldn't. Gray orbs remained on the ground between them as if trying not to give her thoguhts away. She was afraid of the darkness and if he left... What would happen? Would she succumb to it? What else could she focus on? If she did succumb to it would she wake up again? If she didn't there would be no one to wake her up.
The fur between her eyes furrowed slightly as she tried to get control on the rise of 'panic.' Teeth clenched as if in pain, although she was in pain it was not the pain that concerned her. Stormy gray orbs darkened with determination, she could do it on her own if she had to. Her mind automatically pushed away any doubt. Shelter would be found, and she would get there somehow. If she was semi warm she could sleep and be less in danger of not waking up.
All of these thoughts, and emotions playing across her face happened within the few mere minutes of silence after her last statement. During which she continued to stare at the ground.

He watched her, his ears twitching as he tried to pick up some sound, any sound. But he couldn’t hear a single thing anymore except the breathing of this new wolf. He still thought she may be a little crazy. Even the idea of her maybe making up what she had just said crossed his mind. But he shoved that away instantly. No wolf would make up such a traumatic tale. Vyper tilted his head to the side a little, still confused as to why she had run for so damn long.
The female seemed deep in thought for a while, and he patiently waited for her to say something. He knew it wouldn’t be smart or nice to rush her. She was exhausted, he understood that. Heck, he would have been exhausted to. He had never run for an entire day before. And he didn’t plan to, either. Well, not unless he could help it.
A pleasure to meet you Vyper, sorry to have met this way.
The dark colored female finally spoke to him, and he perked his ears up ontop of his head, intent on listening to whatever she may say. Something bad, something good, something interesting or something dull he didn’t care. It was actually a relief to speak to someone, after weeks of not doing so.
Look, I know I sorta crashed into you. I have taken quite a bit of your time already. I'd understand if you left...
Vyper was stunned for a moment. This one time he was happy to talk to someone, and she thought he wanted to leave? Did she think he was mad at her for crashing into him? He wasn’t. “Its ok that you bumped into me” he said and was about to say ‘it happens all the time’ though shoved that away, considering it wasn’t every day someone tripped over his back. “And I am not leaving. I have nowhere else to go” he said and noticed she was staring at the ground, as if sad, or shy, or what? He sighed and also averted his gaze from her.

Mentally assessing her body's condition, she began to plan how to find shelter on her own. She couldn't help but be dismayed at what she found, unsure now if she could do it on her own. Gray orbs had remained on the ground as she began eating snow again. The snow would melt in her belly and help rehydrate what was lost, though it would be awhile to regain all that was lost especially when she was eating snow and not drinking straight water.
“Its ok that you bumped into me” “And I am not leaving. I have nowhere else to go”
Tempest's salmon colored tongue licked her maw as she stopped eating the snow and raised her gaze to look at Vyper finally. It was taking a lot of energy to stay awake, let alone think of how to not fall asleep and get to somewhere warm. A sigh of relief escaped as Vyper said he was not leaving. He helped her stay focused and it pushed the darkness away a little.
The snow in her belly made her cold as she began to shiver slightly. She had not thought about what eating snow would do to her core temperature. Pushing the thought away and ignoring the coldness and her shivering, she focused on the wolf before her. Gray orbs had caught a few confused looks from him. She wondered just how crazy he thought she was.
Stormy gray orbs remained on Vyper, deciding she would tell him more of how she had come here. I was chasing a cat. The corners of her muzzle lifted slightly in a small grin, her eyes lightening a bit at the thought of how funny the whole thing had been. I know what you must be thinking, why would one chase a cat? Let alone chase a cat up in the trees. Her grin grew a little wider. I was bored, had nothing better to do and no where to go. Not to mention this cat stole my rabbit. So I chased this cat. It thought to escape me by climbing the trees, so I followed. It takes awhile to get used to jumping limbs in a tree but I could at least keep the cat in my sight.
Tempest shook her head slightly at her own folly. Her grin was replaced by a look of indifference as she continued her story. I don't know where they came from. I was in neutral territory. They probably heard the snarls of the cat everytime I got close to it. When the cat jumped out of the trees and I jumped to follow it I realized I was not alone. When I listened I could hear heavy pawfalls and heavy panting... Coming from all sides as if they were circling me. Finally they came out of the brush and sat in a loose circle around me. Three male wolves, the one I assume was their leader asked if I knew I was hunting in their land. Stormy gray orbs narrowed as she couldn't hide her anger.
I replied I was in neutral territory. I figure they are a roving pack, evil wolves claiming whatever they wish. They laughed and stood up. The leader saying a coyot mongrel had no place amixst wolves. I retorted with 'By your looks, let me guess... Your father was a boar?' Tempest gave a humorless laugh and turned her face away, looking towards the trees. He did not like that very much. I could tell they were going to give me a hard time anyway, so why go down belly up right? Of course, he roared with outrage and lunged making it easy to dodge. Yet when he attacked so did the other two. I am fast, but not invincible. Many of the hits I took just bruised me. I was quick enough to take the brunt of the attacks in places where it would not incpacitate me to much. I was lucky enough to rip one's ear almost to shreds and bruise someone's front leg. That was where my luck ran out and someone got a hold of my right side. Out of pure instinct my back legs shot out and caught someone in the jaw. I heard a crack and was let go. I ran.
Grary orbs looked back at Vyper, the anger gone and now replaced with wariness. She layed her head on her front paws, cold and tired. I ran for so long because they chased me for a good while. At least one of them did. I was bleeding. No matter how hard I tried to cover the trail, blood in the air is a dead give away. Before long, I stopped thinking and went off of instinct and ran. Time held no meaning, just escape. I would not die belly-up. I was running for so long... I did not see you until the last second, all I could do to not fully run into you was to jump over you. And even than I only registered a shadow, a darkening in the snow. It was not until after I was laying in the snow for awhile that I realized I had seen something.
Her eyes closed a moment before opening slowly and looking at Vyper again. So here I am... Tempest closed her eyes again as if retelling the story just made her more tired. She could feel herself shiver even more. She began speaking again, her voice quiet, sleepy and her eyes finally opened again, though only half way. I am scared of the darkness. When I said I'd understand if you left I only said it because I didn't want you to leave because than I would have to face the darkness alone... Her voice a mere whisper as her eyelids drooped. With her eyes still closed she said, I hadn't realized til now I did not want to die alone... So tired and cold. She was supposed to do something yet she couldn't remember what. Getting someplace warm... Yes, that was it. But it did not matter anymore because the darkness was there in her mind pushing her to sleep.

I was chasing a cat.
Vyper gave her an odd look. She was chasing a cat? Why was she chasing a cat? That was weird. Everyone knew cats were extremely hard to catch. What was the point of chasing one? Its not like you could make much of a meal out of one, anyways. But then the female, who had not told him her name yet, began to explain further.
Her story was a shocking one, and every now and then he would hear her pause, but then go on. He saw several flashes of anger in her eyes. He didn’t blame her for being angry. He would have been angry as well. Heck, he was getting angry just by hearing of all this. It wasn’t hard to imagine what those three male wolves would of done to a lone female.
So here I am...
The female said after she was done with her story. It was quite dramatic. Hard to imagine to, but he believed her. He felt a little bad for her as well. Oddly enough, he wanted to stand up, run off, and track those evil wolves down and rip them to shreds, and then do it a hundred times over again. Sure they hadn’t managed to do much, but just the thoughts those wolves probably had annoyed Vyper to a great extent. But those wolves were probably long gone by now. He had no way of getting to them.
I am scared of the darkness. When I said I'd understand if you left I only said it because I didn't want you to leave because than I would have to face the darkness alone... I hadn't realized till now I did not want to die alone...
Vyper looked at her sadly. She must have been cold. And she thought she was going to die? Crap. He had to keep her awake. But how? He thought quickly before coming to a decision. He got up and then laid down next to her. Vyper had to keep her warm so she wouldn’t freeze. Sure, he didn’t take well to others company usually, but he couldn’t just let this female die, especially after what she had gone through. And he had to keep her awake, at least until he was sure she would be alright. “You haven’t told me your name yet” he said.

Tempest was drifting in and out, slipping more towards unconsciousness. She did not even hear the wolf before her move yet her gray orbs opened when he laid next to her. She registered three things at once. One, the difference in temperature immediately. Two, how close he was. Three, the fact that despite her being a strange wolf Vyper still went out of his way to help her.
She lifted her head, more alert. Maybe it was because of her recent encounter that made her more awake and alert when another came so close. Or maybe it was because she was a loner and she let no one get this close, or rather no one came this close to her. She had to admit to herself, that either this wolf had alterior motives for helping her out or he truly was just a decent good wolf. Tempest leaned more towards the latter.
“You haven’t told me your name yet”
She looked confused a moment, had she not told him her name already? Trying to replay their conversation in her mind was nearly impossible, she was alert maybe but still exhausted. Tempest turned her head towards him slightly, stormy gray orbs focused on him.
My name is Tempest. She gave half a smile. Thank you Vyper. For not leaving and for helping me when you don't have to. Her voice quiet, yet steady. She turned her orbs to their surroundings once more trying not to invade his space more than she already had, although her gaze kept drifting back to Vyper. It helped her to stay awake. Her shivering slowed.
She said nothing in the silence that followed. To her the silence was comfortable, maybe it felt that way to her because she was sleepy. A sigh escaped from between her teeth. She wanted to sleep, yet she did not want Vyper to do more than he already had and asking for him to lay next to her while she slept off her exhaustion was a bit much. Rolling her shoulders she prepared to stand in a few minutes to search for a warm place to rest.
Trying to give herself time to mentally prepare for actually moving, she gave a side glance at Vyper, May I ask why you are here? Tempest paused a moment, Hmm... That sounded rude. I guess what I meant was could you tell me more about yourself? If you don't mind.
Tempest thought she was talking to much. With a mental shake of her head, she promised herself she would converse with others more often. In her eyes it was true that a wolf that spent all their time alone eventually became crazy. The talking though helped wake her up more, and the warmth coming from Vyper made her numb body slowly start to register the pain. Her right back leg burned, she had yet to lick it clean and was unsure of whether she could walk on it.
Determination lite behind her eyes, she would get up and walk to somewhere warm soon.

He waited paitently for the female to reply to what he had asked. Or maybe she wasn’t going to reply at all? Maybe she was to far gone already and was slowly dying? Was there no hope? But, apparently there was, because she turned her head and finally spoke to him.
My name is Tempest. Thank you Vyper. For not leaving and for helping me when you don't have to.
But he did to have to. “Yes I do have to help you. I was already involved. I have been since you nearly ran me over. I couldn’t just walk away” he said, giving her a small smile. Talking so much was weird to him. Normally he wouldn’t mutter a sentence for weeks at a time. But here he was, talking to this almost stranger wolf. But then again, he couldn’t just ignore her, could he? That would be very rude if he did. And even though many thought he was rude because he tried to avoid others, in reality he was a very nice and decent wolf. Well, at least he thought he was. Or maybe he really was just a bastard. But if he was a bastard he wouldn’t be here right now, would he? So therefore he must be good. Vyper shook his head then, clearing it and trying not to confuse himself more than he already had.
The male heard her sigh, and he focused back on her, wondering what was wrong. She wasn’t dying still, was she? He noticed her shivering had mostly died down, which was a good sign, right? He wasn’t even sure. For some reason his brain seemed to have frozen up after he had shoved everything from it.
May I ask why you are here? Hmm... That sounded rude. I guess what I meant was could you tell me more about yourself? If you don't mind.
He gave her a small smile and nodded. “Well, I’m a four year old and I was born on a cold and stormy spring night, the same night my father was struck dead” he suddenly paused right then and there, his voice holding up. He couldn’t bare to go on about that. It was amazing he had even muttered anything about it. He gulped a little and closed his eyes. “Never mind about that, there is nothing to tell other than that I'm a lone, wondering wolf” he mumbled, sorrow filling him slightly as he turned his head forward.

Stormy gray orbs turned to look fully at Vyper as he began to tell her more about himself. She was taken aback slightly as he admitted the night he was born, his father was struck dead. It seemed odd to her that he would tell her something like that. All of these thoughts were forgotten, even her pain, as Vyper paused and than closed his eyes in sorrow.
Gray orbs filled with worry, a frown upon her muzzle. She had not meant to bring up such a sad memory. Without thinking about it, she leaned towards Vyper and put her muzzle under his, pressing her head lightly into his neck in an attempt to comfort. Please don't be sad. I am sorry Vyper, I hadn't meant... She trailed off, pulling back, surprised at herself for getting so close to another, yet alone attempting to comfort.
We are both lone, wandering wolves. She said quietly. Deciding to change the subject, Tempest looked at Vyper and smiled slightly. I think I can get up now so we can find somewhere to rest , rather than the open... Tempest paused a moment before editing what she had said, Well I mean, so I can rest... and I would be grateful if you would come.
She stood slowly, putting most of her weight on her three legs and little to none on her back right. Her smile disappeared as she began getting up, her breath catching as she clamped her teeth together. She couldn't believe how much it hurt, it felt like she had gotten trampled by a bear. Bruised and overexerted muscles. Despite how much she hurt, now that she was standing she would get to someplace where she could rest.
Gray orbs looked to Vyper as she let out the breath she was holding, the corners of her muzzle tilted up slightly though the smile didn't reach her eyes. Her tail wagged slightly, Alright, I am standing. How about we find someplace to rest? She asked hopefully?

Please don't be sad. I am sorry Vyper, I hadn't meant...
He was a little surprised when she tried comforting him with her words and her touch. Though it honestly did little to help. The memory was very depressing. Sure he didn’t even remember his father, but it was still sad. Maybe that’s what made it so sad, because he never knew him. Though from what his mother had told him, he had been a very honorable wolf indeed. And Vyper didn’t think Tempest should apologize for asking, considering she didn’t know. So he slightly shook his head. “Its fine, don’t apologize” he told her.
We are both lone, wandering wolves.
The male looked at her, not surprised by what she said. He had had a feeling that she had been alone, considering there had been nobody with her and she hadn’t mentioned anyone anyways. Though being alone wasn’t to bad, to him. Sure it got pretty lonely at times, but the quiet was very peaceful, which is what he liked. He hated loud noises and to much activity going on. He wondered how she felt about being alone.
I think I can get up now so we can find somewhere to rest , rather than the open... Well I mean, so I can rest... and I would be grateful if you would come.
Vyper smiled at her slightly and nodded. Out here was pretty cold, and even though it seemed like there was nothing else around he still didn’t want to be caught out in the open. And as Tempest got up, looking like she was in a lot of pain, he also stood to his feet. Vyper shook out his coat and observed her, seeing the smile that was on her face. But it was easy to tell it was fake. Yet he said nothing about it.
Alright, I am standing. How about we find someplace to rest?
Honestly he didn’t think she should be moving at all, but he got the sense she didn’t want to hear a lecture on why she should just stay put. So he nodded and spoke “Yeah, lets go” he said and slowly started walking in the direction he had originally been standing, making sure not to leave his injured companion behind.

Tempest could see the sorrow despite her attempts at comfort. She knew not how to help repress the memory or rather get past it other than to not say more on it. If he wanted her help he would ask, right? She left it be and said nothing more other than giving a slight nod when he said it was fine and to not apologize. Though, she still felt bad none the less.
She saw his small smile and although the thought of taking a step forward was daunting she felt lighter, as if not being alone gave her some strength. Maybe the instinct of not showing weakness gave her the determination to press forward.
Stormy gray orbs, more alert than before, looked around before moving. She grinned slightly at her own hesitation. Out of the corner of her eye she could see the look on Vyper's face, as if he wanted to say something but refrained from doing so and instead agreed while beginning to walk forward. She noted, with appreciation, that he was walking slowly and waiting for her. He seemed to have to take the lead in which direction to go and she let him lead.
Gray orbs fixed on the white covered forest floor beneath as she took a step forward. With her muzzle clenched, breathing through her nose, she awkwardly put weight on her right back leg. Dark gray tufted ears flipped back as a sharp pain shot up her leg and she paused and took a deep breath. Trying to look on the bright side, at least the pain from her leg pushed away her other pains, or at least they became easier to bear.
Lifting her eyes, Tempest stared straight ahead purposely not looking at Vyper knowing how pathetic she must look. Her pink salmon tongue slipped from between her lips as she licked her muzzle before clenching it once more. All this was done within a few moments before she took another step, although this time she beared little if any weight on her back right leg and limped, or hopped on her back leg.
It may have been slow going, but it was a steady pace. With the snow, it was tricky to limp and even trickier to hop on three legs when she needed to rest her back leg. At some point she had leaned towards Vyper without realizing it until her shoulder brushed his. She straightened quickly with a muttered sorry.
She silently hoped that they would find some semblance of shelter soon, although she knew they barely covered any distance with her setting the pace. To stop continually thinking of when they would reach shelter, she glanced at Vyper before looking once more before her to watch the ground before her paws.
The tip of her tongue slipped between her canines as she began to pant slightly. You know there is something to love about each season. The ending of Winter and the beginning of Spring brings unknown weather. The snow though brings such beauty, even at night it makes the land glow. And the quiet, peaceful calm it brings is worth the cold... well in good health it is worth it. She finished with a little humor. She knew she was rambling but it kept her thoughts lucid and kept her paws moving forward, though her ears remained pressed halfway against her skull.

As Vyper led the way he made sure to take quick glances every couple minutes to make sure the stricken female had not collapsed into the snow. If she did he would have been very sorry about it. He wanted to help out as much as possible, though it was hard. What could he do for her? Pretty much nothing. He had no healing powers that would make her better, and kind words of comfort didn’t do much, either, except make her smile. But that was it. He felt so weak because of the fact he had nothing to give that would make her injuries go away.
The male shook his head and took another glance at Tempest, seeing her do a hoping motion. The progress they were making was quite slow, and any other wolf would of probably been dying to get going. But this was Vyper. He was a patient wolf most of the time, just like right now. He felt as if part of this was his fault anyways, so he couldn’t just leave her behind. He had to help. When she leaned towards him and touched his shoulder, he had almost leaned back towards her to keep her on her feet just incase she was about to fall over. But all she had done was straighten up and apologize, which she seemed to do way to much.

Vyper looked at her once again, his ears perked forward on his skull. She had such a way of saying things, it made him want to listen, which was rare. He gave her a small smile. “It is quite beautiful” he said and looked around. Then his eyes spotted something and he squinted is golden eyes. In the distance through the trees was a massive, gnarled old tree which looked to have a hollowed out trunk. It looked as if a fire had burned through it. Though he could tell the tree was still alive, surprisingly. He smiled and picked up his pace a little, though quickly brought it back again. “Look, some shelter” he said, sure even from this distance it was what they were looking for.

She could feel him glancing at her continuously, though it did not make her feel uncomfortable. Strange for her, to be so comfortable around another, especially someone she barely knew. She wondered silently if it was because of her current condition which made her somewhat trust this wolf or would she have felt the same if they had met under extremely different circumstances. Not that it mattered, she trusted this wolf enough to ask for help... Well ask in her own way... She wondered if the pace he had to keep because of her irritated him, yet he said nothing.
The fur between her eyes furrowed a bit as she realized her mind was wandering yet again and she began to think of sleep.
It is beautiful.
She tilted her head slightly as she smiled in return, gray orbs lightening. Seeing him look around and squint at something she turned to look as well. She could focus to a point yet was unsure of what he was looking at. Though when he picked up the pace, she was sure it had to be something good, shelter hopefully. With her ears perked forward, she attempted to match his pace.
Look, some shelter.
Gray orbs sparkled as she turned her head to look at him, at the same time noticing he slowed his pace once more to make it easier for her. You have exceptional eyesight. Her tone sincere, as she gazed ahead in anticipation, finally spotting the giant, ancient tree in which a cavern was made from the depths of its trunk. Despite this massive flaw, the tree still flourished. When Vyper had slowed his pace, she had taken a step ahead of him indicating she could keep up a slightly faster pace despite her limping in her eagerness to reach the cofines of the tree.
Despite her attempt to increase the pace, eager as he was, it still took some time to reach the ancient tree. She stopped in front of it, her right hind leg lifting from the ground burning even more from her overeagerness. Her muzzle lifted as her gaze swept up its trunk to look upon the enormous branches above, gnarled giving the look of a wicked embrace. I wonder how old this tree is to have stood the test of time all these long years. Amazing. Her voice quiet, yet awed.
Her gaze lowered as she glance at Vyper, a small sheepish grin upon her muzzle in an attempt to hide her pain yet again, as much as hide her embarrassment at such a comment. She was eaily amused and awed by the beauty of that around her. Time and trraveling alone gave one an appreciation of that which surrounds them, at least in her case.
She let her back paw touch the ground gingerly, her gaze focused in the hollowed cavern within the tree allowing the thought of sleep, rest, and warmth to consume her mind as she stepped forward step by step until she was inside. Overdone it again. Yet, what was more pain on top of pain... At that point it all just swept through her like waver after wave making no difference between.
Tempest laid down with her left side touching the back part of the trunk. Her head laid down partly on top her paws and part on the ground, her gray orbs facing towards the hole of the hollow. It was big enough for the both of them, especially since she was not that large herself. Her breathing evened out as she said, This is an excellent resting place, and it will be really warm with the body heat from both of us. Thinking of the warmth she smiled and lifted her head waiting for Vyper.

He smiled as Tempest picked up her pace to get to the shelter as well. Though he still felt bad for her and the pain he knew she was in. What if her leg was broken? What if it never healed right and became just some useless thing? That could be a death sentence for a wolf. Death was never a pleasant subject for Vyper though, so he shunned all thoughts of it from his head as they headed towards the tree.
You have exceptional eyesight.
Vyper turned his head to look at her and smiled at her comment. “Thanks” he said with a slight chuckle. It was true. One of his best qualities was his eyesight. Though his eyes themselves were a little weird. Many wolves had gotten freaked out by the bright color that they were.
As they finally reached the tree, he stopped walking and peered at it with his golden orbs curiously. What if there was something in it? Like a snake… Though he found it hard to imagine a snake hiding in the trunk of a tree on a cold winter night. Snakes were probably in warmer places than this. And he could not hear anything coming from the dark space of the trunk.
I wonder how old this tree is to have stood the test of time all these long years. Amazing.
His eyes slowly drifted back to the female before looking up at the gnarled mass of branches. Well, that had been deep. Though, she was right. The tree surely was a magnificent specimen. It was most likely hundreds of years old. It had stood the test of time. Fire, water, earth, wind. Nothing had brought it down. It really was amazing.
This is an excellent resting place, and it will be really warm with the body heat from both of us.
He hadn’t even noticed that Tempest had gone in until she had spoken and brought him from his thoughts. He looked in through the entrance at her, seeing she was already resting. And after a quick glance around the seemingly deserted woods, he went in as well and laid about a foot away, his head resting on top of his large paws.

Laying down once more, she immediately felt better and worse. Better because she was no longer moving, yet worse because now she had nothing to keep her mind occupied and focused entirely on the pain. Turning her head, gray orbs looked, a bit forlorn, at the puntuce marks on her hind leg. That was the worst of her injuries, the rest would go away with rest and water. She felt a bit self conscious as she began to lick at it in an attempt to clean it of debris and matted fur. Wicning slightly as her rough tongue began a slow long caress across the wounds, she cleaned as much as she could until she became to tired. Her cleaning would have to do, she was to tired to continue further.
Tempest laid her head upon her paws once more. She was content, happy to be alive and warm. And strangely enough, happy to be in the company of this wolf. Her gray orbs focused on Vyper. Was it luck, stupidity on her part, or fate that had brought her colliding into Vyper. She wasn't sure she believed in fate. Realizing her mind had wandered and she was still staring at Vyper she gave a small smile and glanced away for a moment before returning her gaze.
She knew she had to say something. Thank you again Vyper for... everything. I am glad I crashed into you. The corners of her muzzle turned upward at that last part. She still could not believe she actually did that. Thinking on that brought back the other memories and her smile faded. With a sigh she yawned and her eyes began to close. And thanks for... not leaving me alone. She admitted quietly.
Her eyes closed fully, and her breathing deepened. It seemed she had fallen asleep.

Vyper watched as she cleaned her wounds. He still felt a little sorry for her, but wasn’t going to tell her that. Nobody ever wanted others to feel sorry for them. Well, nobody he knew of. So instead of staring at her with a sad expression, he looked away and focused on the dark, charred walls of the inside of the trunk. The fire that had burned it must have been a long time ago. Maybe even a hundred years.
Thank you again Vyper for... everything. I am glad I crashed into you.
He didn’t look at her when she spoke. Instead just dropped his golden gaze to the ground. Why was she so thankful? What had he done for her? Oh right, he had talked to her, walked with her, and even laid next to her. All were simple gestures of kindness, yet somehow they had probably saved her life. Yet for some reason he didn’t feel as she should b so thankful.
And thanks for... not leaving me alone.
The male finally looked up at her, seeing her eyes close. “Anytime” he said quietly, not wanting to disturb her rest. All he could hope for was that her body wouldn’t go into shock. The risk of that wasn’t as high as it had been an hour before, but he was still worried. Yet, he did not wake her, and fell into unconsciousness as well.

She was walking through the forest... Hmmph that's helpful. She grinned to herself, unable to feel depression or worry at not knowing where she was. A wolf followed where her paws led her, especially that of a loner with no home to stay the instinctive urge to continue forward. Stormy gray orbs looked about her as she paused mid-step, one dark gray tufted ear turning 180. A rustle or maybe something brushing past the hard bark of a tree. Worry and caution formed a line between her eyes as her muzzle crinkled slightly in warning. Something was wrong, or rather off. She had a feeling of being watched, or worse hunted. Her eyes widened before narrowing once more as she tried to remember what she had been doing before walking through this forest... Had she not been running from someone or something. At that moment her right hind leg began to burn. She began to walk slowly at first, and than faster.
The surrounding trees that once had made her calm seem shadowed and foreboding now. The sky darkened until dark storm clouds, the color of her own eyes when frightened or angry, covered every inch. She stopped as she heard a branch ahead of her snap and looked to the sky. Had it not just been sunny? How is that possible? Before she could think more on it a large form lunged at her from the shadows of a tree. The impact to her shoulder making her cry out as she was thrown to the side. Jumping to her paws, with jaws apart she lunged to attack, realizing it was kill or be killed...
It was still dark outside the cavern of the tree, not much time had passed since both wolves had fallen asleep. Tempest was now laying on her side, having switched to that position while asleep. Her paws twitched as her dreams turned into a nightmare. The lips of her muzzle lifted slightly in a silent snarl. Her ears flicked backward as a quiet whimper escaped from between her jaws as if she truly felt that which was played out in the dream.
