 New Here?
« Thread Started on Nov 15, 2008, 9:46pm »

Hello there newbies!

So you are -- as your name implies -- new to this site, aye? Maybe this is your first RPG ever, maybe us staff-personel are making all this too confusing, or maybe you're browsing like a good newbie. Whatever the reason, you have stumbled upon the ultimate WWM Newbie tutorial!

1. Lurk
Lurk about. Lurk in the role-playing threads. Lurk in the bulletin boards. Lurk in the character pages. Lurk in the out-of-character chat sessions. Lurk everywhere! This even applies for people who already have accounts.
Lurking allows you to see how other people do things, and how WWM works in its day-to-day running.

2. Join, Create an Account!
If you have not made an account, get on that! Your account name does not have to be one of your characters or you actual name; it can be anything you like (as long as it's not offensive). Be creative. :)
To create an account, simply click the "Register" button at the top of this page and follow the instructions. By registering for an account, you will be able to log into that account and start playing!

3. Readreadread
After you have created your account -- or if you already have -- these threads need reading:
  • Rules
These rules will tell you a lot about WWM, about what you can do as well as what you cannot! There is a lot of information in there, bu dont worry. Its all fairly easy to remember as long as you use common sense! If you have a problem, please contact the staff by PM or via the Taggy on the right ---->
  • Lore
The Lore is the setting and plot of this site. It will tell you what has happened in the past, and what is going on currently. Its rather large, but if you dont feel like reading the whole version make sure you read the condensed version at the top of the thread.
  • Term Glossary
If you're new to RPing, you might want to read this thread first. This thread will tell you all you need to know about the specil words we use at WWM. If you're not new to RPing, most of the thread won;t be new to you, but there are some WWM-specific terms at the end and a useful list of Staff nicknames at the bottom as we do have a tendancy to confuse people by calling eachother strange names!
  • Returning Members: The Changes
Are you an old WWM player? This thread will give you a quick rundown on what has changed at WWM so you're up-to-date!

And some other minor but important threads. These will come in useful when certain instances pop up when you are playing:
[blockquote]
  • The Power List
If your character wants to get a power, read this thread and choose which one you would like or choose a few and the White Woves will help you choose one.
  • Breeding Form
Has your character found a mate and they would like to have puppies? Read this thread and follow the directions included. Make sure it's breeding season before you post though!
  • Starting a Pack
Read this thread if your character wants to start a pack.
  • Territories and Claiming
Read this thread if the pack you are in is going to claim a tarritory.

4. How to Make a Character
So you've read through all that, gleaned bunches of information, yay! Now you're ready to make a character. To do so you simply have to venture on over to this board.
There you will find this wonderful thread:

This contains all the bases and rules you'll need to follow while creating your character. Just stick by them and you'll be fine! (We're not strict, we promise.)

Let's go through the application template on step at a time:

Name: The most important thing! You'll want to be creative about this -- nothing like "Spot" or "Bob". If you have absolutely no clue, check out this site, or you can google for some other similar sites.
Age: Try not to go crazy on this one. Keep in mind that wolves normally don't live over ten years out in the wild, nor can two month old pups survive on their own.
Gender: Self explanatory, guy or gal.
Side: This is also an important one. The sides are basic: good, neutral, and evil, so it should also be pretty easy. Generally evil wolves have a dark outlook on life, good wolves a bright one, and neutral wolves tend not to take sides.
Eye Color: Your wolf can have any eye color, ranging from pink to yellow.
Coat Colour: Your wolf can also have any coat color or pattern. Feel free to be as creative as you want! Just remember that neon wolves..well, generally they won't catch as much prey as more natural-colored wolves.
Physical Build: This is where you can describe what your character looks like, besides coloring. Are they tall or short? Fat or skinny? Wimpy or buff? Again, the possibilities are (almost) endless. If you'd like a mutation on your wolf, please read here and scroll to "Mutations" for guidelines.
Personality: Now that you're done with outside appearences, it's time to go in-depth! Think of some basic personality traits: shy or outgoing? Mean or nice? Would they help another or look away? Once you have your basis, you can build off of it, add some quirks and faults to make your character more interesting. (Remember, this does not have to be long -- but a good four sentences would do, as it is what people will refer to when role-playing with the character.)
History: Optional Yes, this does not have to be done. But it is nice to see where your wolf has come from, and why there personality is like it is.
Lineage: Optional The name of your wolve's parents, and any siblings they may have, if you so choose.
Extra Comments: Anything in addition to take into account about your character, or something you'd like to add.
Sample Post: First application only Yes, last one! Here all you have to do is a sample of your writing (via a canine character) so we can check out your writing style. It does not have to be long, just a paragraph or two.

If you're lacking in ideas or need some help, feel free to contact one of the Admins or Mods!

5. Starting or Joining a Thread
Here comes the scary part..where do you start role-playing?! There are many, many places you could start. Once again, the lurking rule applies: look through active threads, and see if you could pop in on one. If that's too scary a prospect, you could make your own thread.
But where? Well, a nice place to get your wolves introduced at is the Water Course. Watering places attract all kinds of animals, so it could be more likely that someone will reply to you.
If you'd like you wolf to join a pack, post a thread up around the borders and await an alpha or alphess to greet your character.

Now..the writing part. Assuming you can form coherent sentences -- as you are on a role-playing site -- all you really need to do is fill up a paragraph or two. Describe the weather (taking into account the season), describe your character's mood, describe their appearance, describe how they move and what they do. Basically, set your character up for an interaction! Make up some kind of interesting situation, but most of all: give people something to work off of.

6. Have Fun
Have tons and tons of fun! This is what role-playing is about, having fun and creating a whole fun-tastic world. Get to it. ;)

Also! Please, ask questions if you don't understand/need reassurance/want to know about something that is confusing you!
